IITA-Mozambique provides relief for victims of cyclone Idai

Staff of IITA-Mozambique have delivered relief materials to The National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) office in response to those who had been affected by cyclone Idai that devastated parts of Mozambique on 14 and 15 March 2019. Some provinces were severely affected and some locations, such as the cities of Beira and Buzi in Sofala Province, were almost completely destroyed. The numbers of fatalities and affected people were frightening and continued to rise every day. The delivery ceremony took place on 28 October at INGC office along with the official opening of the agricultural campaign for 2019‒2020.

Staff appealed to the human consciousness of everyone—friends, partners and other entities—in relation to the victims of cyclone Idai in the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Tete, Zambezia and northern Inhambane Province, that any support they could provide would be of great value to the victims and minimize their suffering.

We thank God that colleagues responded positively, and all contributions received (monetary, clothing, seed, etc.) were channeled through the IITA central offices in Nampula to INGC, the governmental entity responsible for the management of disasters, to make proper delivery to the affected province. IITA staff contributed to donate a cheque of 200,000MZN, 10 tons of cowpea from the SEMEAR Project, and clothes.
